Tyler Morton Set To Join Lyon From Liverpool After Wirtz Signing. The Player Is Set To Leave The Club Permanently To The Ligue 1 Side.
Tyler Morton, a Liverpool midfielder, has reportedly agreed to join Ligue 1 club Lyon, but negotiations have stalled.
Morton, who joined Liverpool when he was seven years old, worked his way up the ranks of his hometown club in the hopes of one day becoming a permanent fixture in the club’s starting eleven. However, the 22-year-old has struggled to play consistent minutes, with only 14 senior appearances in his career.
A transfer appears to be in the best interests of both the player and the club, particularly because Morton appeared in only five games last season under new manager Arne Slot.
According to L’Équipe, Lyon has already established a “contractual agreement” with the midfielder. Liverpool, on the other hand, is apparently requesting a €9 million (£7.8 million; $10.3 million) fee, which the French side deems “too high”.
It’s no surprise that the reigning English champions want to cash in on young talent after spending over €300 million (£256 million; $343 million) in the summer.
Liverpool has added several new players in the last two months, including Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitiké, Milos Kerkez, and Jeremie Frimpong.
The pricing issue has halted Morton’s transfer talks, allowing the England junior to travel with Liverpool to Asia for the club’s pre-season fixtures. The 22-year-old was given the start against AC Milan, but he did not perform well in the 4-2 defeat.
However, Morton’s performance did not reflect his expertise. The midfielder shone for the Three Lions during their European Under-21 Championship-winning campaign, assisting England’s late victory over Germany in the final.
Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp earlier lauded Morton, describing him as a “brilliant” player with an “outstanding football brain”. However, considering Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch’s outstanding pairing, the Englishman will have far too few opportunities to play consistently in a red shirt.
Liverpool chose not to sell Morton last summer despite interest from Bayer Leverkusen, but they now have a second chance if Lyon negotiations reach an agreement.
