NIB investigates past government officials; Napo confirms involvement

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the 2024 Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has confirmed that he is under investigation by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) over matters related to his tenure as Minister of Education.
In an interview with 1957 News that has since gone viral, Dr. Opoku Prempeh popularly known as Napo disclosed that he has visited the NIB offices to assist with investigations, the most recent being on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.
“People don’t know that I’ve been invited by the NIB to assist in investigations into some issues during my time at the Ministry of Education. I couldn’t have declined that invitation,” he said.
He served as Minister of Education from January 2017 to January 2021 and later as Energy Minister. Acknowledging the time lapse since his tenure, he admitted he doesn’t remember every detail but emphasized his full cooperation with the investigators.
“I’ve forgotten some of the issues; I can’t remember everything that happened while I was in office. That is why we have technocrats and others who assist in running the ministry and keep records,” he explained.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh also noted that he had spent an entire day at the NIB and might return. “I have spent my whole day today at the NIB, and I may go there again tomorrow,” he added.
He used the opportunity to urge fellow politicians to act responsibly while in power. “I always say that those of us in politics should know that no condition is permanent. Today, you can be in power; the next day, you could be in opposition. So politicians in power should always be mindful of what they do with the authority entrusted to them, so that if they are asked to account for their stewardship tomorrow, they can easily do so.”
Although the NIB has yet to release an official statement, other notable figures such as Professor Ameyaw Ekumfi and Kwaku Ohene Gyan have reportedly also been invited for questioning. The investigations are believed to focus on administrative decisions and spending under the previous administration.
